What has never existed is the fifteen kilometres in between — reliable enough that a shopkeeper will promise it and cheap enough that a household will use it. Weavers, potters and craft businesses get a catalogue and a route to market. The work stays in the village; only the goods travel.
Vegetables from farms a few kilometres away, on a standing subscription. The grower is named, the price is theirs, and the produce is picked the morning it is delivered.
A vehicle when it matters — scheduled, shared or urgent. The fleet that carries the shopping carries people to the block hospital.
